My sons and I drove up to meet the troop on Saturday morning and attend the Army vs. Rice football game. This is one of two special “scout-day” football programs hosted by USMA each year to open up their campus for walking tours, club demonstrations and demonstrations by their precision parachute team. At 9 AM on game days, there is also a formal cadet review with pomp and ceremony, full dress uniforms and lots of spectacle.
While Army wasn’t victorious over Rice this day, the game was exciting and fun to watch. Michie (Mikey) stadium is a very nice facility and all of the seats offer a great vantage point for watching the game.
USMA hosts additional youth group friendly events for other athletic programs such as ice hockey and basketball.
My favorite West Point trips have been with Christian Service Brigade because their program includes a chapel service at the cathedral on the West Point grounds. Singing hymns with other units and then hearing testimonies from cadets is a great way to connect fun activity with the seriousness of faith prior to heading into the gym for an exciting match up. TLUSA units are welcome to participate with CSB units for these special activities.
